Jo has been a full time abstract/ mixed media artist for the last 8 years and 3 years ago opened a gallery next to her working studio at her home in Kinloch, Taupō, NZ
Jo tells me she has sold her paintings throughout New Zealand and overseas and has painted commission works for valued clients. She works as a full-time artist.ArterNet Art: Hi Jo, it's great to chat with you today. Our interviews to date have been very popular and they give our audience a more indepth idea of what you are all about and how you approach your artwork.
So let's start the ball rolling by giving us an idea of what was your route to becoming an artist?
Jo: I am a qualified interior designer, and have always had an interest in colour and design.

ArterNet Art: How has your life/upbringing influenced your work?
Jo: I studied art as a subject through my college years and was a colour consultant in my design business.
I also have a love of gardening, so nature’s colours are inspirational for my paintings.
ArterNet Art: What or who were your early influences?
Jo: I studied art history and the works of Mark Rothco and Jackson Pollock were a big influence in my desire to paint abstractly

Jo: I was enthralled with the painting techniques that have been shown with artists tutorials and many wonderful videos available on YouTube.

Jo: I love working with acrylics as they are quick drying which is essential when multi layering and using mixed media.

ArterNet Art: Can you explain to us a bit about your chosen techniques and how you use them.
Jo: I found abstraction intriguing and the fascination of collage mixing and incorporating these techniques into my painting was a challenge that I found irresistible.
ArterNet Art: Can you share some details about your process from conception to creation.
Jo: When I am starting a mixed media painting, I begin with some random marks on to the canvas.
Using charcoal or pencil, I make some shapes, lines or squiggles. Invariably these marks will be covered up later in the process, but it is a good exercise to loosen your painting arm and to activate your canvas.
I then apply paint from my chosen palette, to create my background with colour and some rough shapes.
Then it is time to start with some collage pieces.
This is a fun period, sorting and deciding which pieces work well together.
Once I have these glued in place, I may add more paint over some pieces adding texture and stencilling for more interest and design.
My method involves a mix of both calculated ideas and intuition.
Sometimes there are happy accidents and other times there is a more structured process, but always there is a wonderful element of surprise when viewing your finished mixed media artwork.

Jo: I get inspiration from the garden , the old masters paintings, current fellow artists, design magazines and books.
ArterNet Art: How has your work developed since you began and how do you see it evolving in the future?
Jo: Originally, I painted in a more realistic form, but have now developed my own style in abstraction and mixed media. I am lucky to exhibit my work and also sell through galleries.

ArterNet Art: Can you give us an overview about a piece of your work that holds particularly fond memories and why?
Jo: I painted a series 6 or 7 years ago called “Shadows”. I loved how the late afternoon sun created the shadows through the trees making long and often misshapen dark shapes.
I created 10 paintings in this series and they all sold very quickly.
ArterNet Art: Well done. Is there anything in particular that inspires you to create art?
Jo: I find inspiration in my surroundings and everyday in various forms.

Jo: My first international sale of my artwork was a memorable event.
The other amazing event in my art journey , was being invited to feature in “Colour in Your Life” owned by Australian artist and filmmaker Graeme Stevenson.
My 30 minute video was sold to TV arts channels in 50 countries and can be seen on YouTube, Colour in Your Life Jo Rankin.
My episode has been viewed nearly 30,000 times.

So, that brings me to marketing your artwork: do you have any tips?
Do you struggle with marketing and what areas could you use some guidance?
Jo: I do find the marketing and technical side of my art business a bit of a trial. Naturally, I would rather be painting!
Websites, exhibitions, paperwork, and social media all take many hours of valuable painting time, but it is part and parcel of running a successful business.

ArterNet Art: That's true. How has Covid-19 impacted you and your art business/career over the past year or so?
Jo: Because of online sales and virtual gallery exhibitions, I've have still been able to sell my work .
ArterNet Art: What advice would you give to an aspiring new artist?
Jo: I found that it took time to grow confidence and believe in my ability and dreams. My advice would be to join an art group, watch tutorials, attend workshops and practice, practice, practice.
ArterNet Art: And finally Jo, do you have any quotes you live by?
Jo: Happiness is being an artist, and Home is where the Art is.
